Conflux “Constellations”
Opening Titles

Executed for Conflux “Constellations,” Amazon’s internal design conference, this opening title sequence takes direct inspiration from Carl Sagan’s prolific statement—“Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known.” Inspired by the conference’s themes of music, sound, and space exploration, the film captures the childlike imagination and urge to discover that still exists in every one of us.

The Boy in his Lab

Here, we follow a technologically progressive young boy and gain a glimpse into his fantastical mind’s-eye as we watch him work with his 3D printer to create an emblem symbolic of his future dreams. We watch this emblem (the figure of an astronaut) being created within the reality of the boy’s home computer lab, as it is visually paired with fantastical scenes of how he imagines it coming to life within the void of infinite space. This narrative, timed to intriguing sound design and an intentionally sparse score, will lead the Conflux audience into the realm of transitive thought and prepare them for the further mind-expanding experiences yet to come.

Behind the scenes

The scenes in the interior of the boy’s computer room were captured in a daylight stage, filmed within a production-designed set. The amazing light display was filmed on a sound stage which provided a more controlled environment, wherein we filmed an abundance of footage of our live-action astronaut, upon which we projected light animations directly related to the topics of music, sound, and space exploration. Below is a BTS video showing the process.
